Williamsburg Cemetery CC#4511
1541 Westmount Road E., Kitchener, Ontario, N2G
1A9
Planning for this cemetery began in 1963 when the City of Kitchener
purchased the site. A master plan was developed in 1989. Construction plans
were developed in 1991, with work beginning in 1992. It was officially opened
with a dedicated ceremony October 11, 1995, the first burial having taken place
in June 1995.
Williamsburg Cemetery should be a place for the living as well as those who
passed away. It is situated on 50 acres in Kitchener's west end. the area
features a natural wetland which was preserved during development; gently
sloping grades to maximize water retention; a man-made lake which serves as the
irrigation supply basis; an office/maintenance complex.
Any buildings constructed on the site should always compliment the physical
attributes of the site. with this in mind, the first facility, a chapel and
crematorium building combines the old and the new, and preserves a piece of
history at the same time. The chapel is not new, it is a 80 year old church
building, dismantled four years earlier in Toronto, and assembled at the
cemetery. The character of the building has been preserved, including the
beautiful wooden beams and many of the original windows.
To meet the needs of the entire community there are no specific religious
symbols inside the chapel, and accommodated a variety of funeral options.
The site will continue to develop over several decades, and is expected
to serve the needs of the community for over 50 years.
The cemetery takes its name from what was the Village of Williamsburg, Waterloo
Township, now Kitchener.
