Wilhelm Cemetery CC#4573
South Erb's Road Lot 13, Wilmot Township, Waterloo Region

The Wilhelm Cemetery is located in Wilmot Township, Waterloo Region. The
cemetery has been in this location from the earliest period of settlement of
the area, as evidenced by the dates of the stones. It faced Shantz Mennonite
Church and Steinmann's Mennonite Cemetery across the road.
The 1881 historical atlas of Waterloo pictures a church of this site, facing
the Mennonite church. However, according to Lorne Shantz, whose family has
owned the facing farm since settlement, there has never been a building on the
land, merely the cemetery itself. The atlas also misplaced the school on
the northeast corner, so this small error may not be difficult to imagine.
This small cemetery would seem to have been established by the Wilhelm family
or principally used by them, but also seems to have served the immediate
community, as other small local cemeteries have functioned in other parts of
Wilmot. This crossroads, with its school, church and two cemeteries, has
changed very little in a century and a half. August 1997.
