Strassburg Lutheran Cemetery

Site History

The Huron Business Park was started in 1953. This Historic Cemetery was part of the original private industrial development. Through the efforts of Paul Tuerr Limited, the remaining monuments and stones were preserved. The City of Kitchener purchased this area in 1985, and implemented the cemetery restoration plans with finanicial assistance from Paul Tuerr Limited. The City of Kitchener financed the restoration project through the development project through the development of the industrial park. Dedication took place November 18, 1989.



 Located on this site is the restored cemetery of “The German Evangelical Lutheran Congreation of Strassburg”. The founding pastor was Reverend w. Schular who led the congregraton when it was first organized in 1844. The Church building was a log structure and it was built in 1847-48. The cemetery was officially established in 1850. Although a few burials took place on the site prior to that date. In April 1893, the Strassburg congreation decided to join the St. James Lutheran Church (located 4 miles to the west of the village of Mannheim). The church which was located in the higher area on the east side of the site was dismantled in 1905.  Listed below are the names of those believed to be buried in the cemetery. This information was obtained from Samuel Weicker from his translation of the original church documents…..”

The cemetery memorials found throughout the site are the only grave markers which/remain.  It is not known where the actual graves are situated.



The site has been restored through the efforts of the City of Kitchener and its/L.A.C.A.C.Committee.  The cemetery memorials were salvaged and restored through/the efforts of Paul Tuerr and the City of Kitchener.  This site has also been/designated as a site of historical significance by Kitchener's L.A.C.A.C. Committee/and is now the responsibility of the City of Kitchener and is maintained by the/Cemeteries Section of the Parks and Recreation Department.
