St Paul's
Evangelical Lutheran Church, West Woolwich
In the 1878 atlas of Waterloo County, the map of Woolwich township shows a
church and cemetery on the southwest corner of county road 22 and regional road
86, four miles north of Conestogo and two miles east of Elmira. Twenty
names on the remaining tombstones in the cemetery correspond with names in the
church book of the congregation, which was brought to the attention of Waterloo
Region Branch by Lutzen Riedstra. The contents of the Kirchenbuch are all
in German script, some being unreadable.
The 83 memorials in the cemetery are neatly set in three long cemented
channels. The property has a frontage of 201 feet and a depth of 190
feet. George Bowman of Floradale has been keeping it attractively trimmed
for many years. Many memorials have deteriorated faces because of the soft
material, which makes the inscriptions unreadable. A group of OGS members
made one transcription in 1990; another had been done earlier by Samuel
Weicker. Waterloo Region branch is particularly thankful to the late Mr
Weicker for his efforts in producing the records of this vanished church.
As Mr Weicker had mentioned, the difficulty in reading these records and stones
means that researchers should examine these transcriptions with care.
