Calvary United Cemetery CC#4585
formerly Evangelical United Brethern Cemetery

German Company Tract Lot 37  Regional Road 17 / Hawkesville Road ,  ST. JACOBS, ONTARIO

The Evangelical Association, later called the Evangelical United Brethren, organized its church in St. Jacobs in 1848.  The first minister of this German-speaking congregation was Philip Winkler, who was also a farmer, storekeeper and cobbler.  The little log church was built on the brow of the hill north of the Conestogo river on land obtained by Anthony Reitzel.  When the log church became inadequate, a new brick structure was built in the developing part of town south of the river. The cemetery occupies the site of the old log church.  It is administered and maintained by a cemetery committee of Calvary United Church who have charge of the plans.
