St. John's Lutheran Cemetery CC#4537

Concession 6 lot 6 Eastern Section, Wellesley Township, Waterloo Region, Ontario

St. John's Lutheran Cemetery is located north of Bamberg at Concession 6 Lot 6, Eastern Section, Wellesley Township, quite in the country but on a hill.  This cemetery is connected with St. Johannes' (St. John's) Lutheran church (Canada Synod), founded about 1852 by Mr. Pfeifer. The current church dates from 1872 and is made of uncoursed local stone, described by Dr. Gordon Couling (WHS 1972) as being characterized by "light mortar marked off with a thin incised line to suggest more carefully cut blocks".

For the first fifty years of its life the church had it own pastor, but as the number of Lutheran families in the area declined, it was joined with Linwood in 1907. One of its pastors (1912-1925) was the distinguished Rev. John H. Reble. Gradually it faded and was only opened two or three times a year for services. in 1973 a campaign to save it was successful, and it now holds four Lutheran services a year, as well as being rented out for services to another denomination. 1990
