Scott's Corners Cemetery CC#4937
formerly Conc 8, Lot 4 Beverly Township Wentworth County
now in North Dumfries Township, Waterloo County
From: Tweedsmuir History of Scott's Corners OA MS 8 Reel 14
I wish to pay tribute to the early settlers of the country who endured so many
hardships to leave to us the great inheritance which we enjoy today, and who
were laid to rest in small burial grounds throughout the country. Some of
these graves were marked, but many were not, and with the passing of their
generation the story of their difficulties, their successes and their failures,
passed too.
In this section a small cemetery is located on the north half of lot 4, Conc.8,
now occupied by R.G.Bond. It is to be found on two adjoining knolls near
the line fence between the Bond and Penner farms, and is located in the
southwest corner of the first field south of Highway 97.
In his book "The Pioneers of Beverly", John A.Cornell mentions this
cemetery. He had asked John Allan, grandfather of Alex Allan, of Clyde
for information regarding the early settlers and the following is his letter in
part.
"In this graveyard 26 or 28 people have
been buried although there are only four headstones. Anson McCarthy's is
the oldest interment on record, he having been buried there in 1813.
Jonas Sipes died May 5th,1825. Jacob Sipes died 12th Oct.1823. On his
headstone is cut: "In perfect health and strength from this world did go,
and leave my friends in sorrow, grief and woe." I was
told that he died at Lamb's Hotel. Joses Winter died June 4,1838, aged
65. On his headstone is cut:
"Stop traveller, as you pass by,
As you are now, so once was I
As I am now, you soon must be.
Prepare for death and follow me."
He was at Hamilton preparing for the celebration of the Coronation on the
Queen. He fell out of his buggy on the way home and broke his neck.
The last that was buried there was Mrs.Gouch, about fifty years ago (about
1839). I understand it was W.Grummett who cut the stones. He lived
out near where Dr. Smith now lives (Dr. Seaton)". To the best of my
knowledge this is the only cemetery in S.S. No. 13
Beverly. At this date no stones are standing and no graves are marked.
NB This was apparently written about 1967. Author
not cited.
This cemetery has disappeared by recording date (1992) and the only remaining stones
are stored at the Scott's Corners Women's Institute headquarters in the old
schoolhouse.
