Detweiler Mennonite Cemetery, Rosevile CC#4493
North Dumfries Township, Waterloo Region, Ontario
Roseville Rd., Concession 11 Lot 37,
The history of this church began in 1822 with the
arrival of Jacob Detweiler and his family from Pennsylvania. he became
the first minister of the new congregation. Onc acre of land was transferred to
the Church in 1830 and registered in 1842 to be used for the sole purpose of a
church and a burial ground.
"This land, enclosed by a rail fence, was used as place of burial and in
1855 the present stone church was erected and a stone well was built along the
north side of the burial ground facing the road. A board fence was put along
the other sides of the grounds. As the registration of deaths was not
compulsory at that time, we can find no rcord of the first burials. The
earliest one for which a stone remains was in 1833." " : from an
address given by Dr. Sarah Detweiler in 1931
The little congregation disbanded in 1966. The building remains and is being
used for community activities.
